Type Chart (Generation I)
15 types - no Dark, no Steel, no Fairy
Generation I has 15 types. Dark, Steel and Fairy do not exist yet. Read the table by row: the row is the attacking type, the column is the defending type. Blank means normal damage. Dual types multiply, so Water against a Rock/Ground Pokemon such as Geodude or Rhyhorn is ×4.

Generation I quirks you must not forget
- Ghost does nothing to Psychic. This is a bug - it was meant to be super effective, and the games even tell you Psychic-types fear Ghosts. In practice it barely matters, because Lick is the only damaging Ghost move in the generation.
- Bug beats Poison AND Poison beats Bug. Both were changed to ×½ in later generations.
- Ice is neutral against Fire in Gen 1; it became ×½ in Generation II.
- Psychic is broken. Only Psychic resists Psychic, Ghost cannot touch it, and the Bug moves that would punish it are weak. Kadabra and Alakazam solo whole Elite Four rounds.
- Dragon is inert offensively: the only Dragon move in Gen 1 is Dragon Rage, which deals a flat 40 damage regardless of type.
Entities by type
Super effective (x2) against: Grass, Poison, Psychic. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Fire, Fighting, Flying, Ghost. Super effective on Grass, Poison and Psychic - but the only decent Bug moves in Gen 1 are Twineedle and Pin Missile, so Psychic stays unpunished.
Super effective (x2) against: Dragon. Not very effective (x1/2) against: nothing. Dragon Rage is the only Dragon move in Gen 1 and it deals a flat 40 damage, so Dragon is effectively an inert offensive type.
Super effective (x2) against: Water, Flying. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Electric, Grass, Dragon. No effect (x0) against: Ground. Ground-types are flat-out immune - the reason your starter Pikachu is dead weight against Brock and against Giovanni.
Super effective (x2) against: Normal, Ice, Rock. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Poison, Flying, Psychic, Bug. No effect (x0) against: Ghost. Hits Normal, Ice and Rock for 2x, nothing at all on Ghost. Yellow gives Mankey Low Kick at L9 specifically so a Pikachu starter can beat Brock.
Super effective (x2) against: Grass, Ice, Bug. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Fire, Water, Rock, Dragon. Ice does NOT resist Fire in Gen 1 (that changed in Gen 2), so Fire is neutral into Ice-types defensively.
Super effective (x2) against: Grass, Fighting, Bug. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Electric, Rock. Note that Gust is a NORMAL-type move in Gen 1 - use Wing Attack or Drill Peck if you want the STAB.
Super effective (x2) against: Ghost. Not very effective (x1/2) against: nothing. No effect (x0) against: Normal, Psychic. Ghost moves are 0x against Psychic in Gen 1. This is a BUG - the games even tell you Psychic-types fear Ghosts. It hardly matters: Lick is the only damaging Ghost move in the whole generation.
Super effective (x2) against: Water, Ground, Rock. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Fire, Grass, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon. Resisted by six types; strong only against Water, Ground and Rock. Razor Leaf has a high critical-hit rate in Gen 1.
Super effective (x2) against: Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Grass, Bug. No effect (x0) against: Flying. Dig and Earthquake answer Electric, Poison, Rock and Fire. Flying-types are immune.
Super effective (x2) against: Grass, Ground, Flying, Dragon. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Water, Ice. The best offensive coverage type in Gen 1 - Blizzard was 90% accurate and hits Grass, Ground, Flying and Dragon for 2x. Frozen Pokemon never thaw on their own.
Super effective (x2) against: nothing. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Rock. No effect (x0) against: Ghost. The Gen 1 workhorse: Body Slam, Hyper Beam and Slash are on almost every good attacker. Ghost-types are completely immune.
Super effective (x2) against: Grass, Bug. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Poison, Ground, Rock, Ghost. In Gen 1 ONLY, Poison is super effective against Bug (and Bug is super effective against Poison). Both were changed to 1/2x in later generations.
Super effective (x2) against: Fighting, Poison. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Psychic. The broken type of Generation I: only Psychic resists Psychic, its Bug counters are terrible moves, and Ghost moves do nothing to it because of a bug. Kadabra/Alakazam solo entire Elite Four rounds.
Super effective (x2) against: Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Fighting, Ground. Rock Slide is the reliable option (Rock Throw and the rest are shaky). Rock/Ground duals take 4x from Water and Grass.
Super effective (x2) against: Fire, Ground, Rock. Not very effective (x1/2) against: Water, Grass, Dragon. Surf is the best all-round attack in the game and doubles as an HM. Water hits Rock/Ground duals (Geodude and Rhyhorn lines) for 4x.
