- Reach Lavender Town first if you like - Rock Tunnel needs HM05 Flash from the Route 2 aide (10 Pokemon owned) and the Boulder Badge.
- In Celadon City, beat Erika: Tangela L30, Weepinbell L32, Gloom L32. Reward: Rainbow Badge and TM21 Mega Drain.
- Take the back stairs of the Celadon Mansion to the top floor for a free level 25 Eevee.
- Get the Coin Case from the man in the restaurant, then work the Game Corner. Prizes: Abra L15 (230 coins), Vulpix L18 (1,000), Wigglytuff L22 (2,680), Scyther L30 (6,500), Pinsir L30 (6,500), Porygon L26 (9,999). Coins cost 1,000 Poke Dollars per 50, or lie hidden on the floor.
- Buy a rooftop vending machine drink at the Department Store - the girl beside it trades drinks for TM13 Ice Beam, TM48 Rock Slide and TM49 Tri Attack, and one drink also gets you past the thirsty Saffron guard.
- Find the Rocket standing in front of the poster at the back of the Game Corner to open the Rocket Hideout: Jessie & James at L25, the Lift Key, and Giovanni's first battle. Beating him yields the Silph Scope.
