New Bark to Violet City

Choose Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile in Professor Elm's lab, then take Route 29 west. In Cherrygrove, follow the Guide Gent's tour to receive the Map Card. Continue through Routes 30 and 31 to Mr. Pokemon's house. Mr. Pokemon gives you the Mystery Egg and Professor Oak gives you the Pokedex.

Elm calls as you leave. Return east and fight your rival at Cherrygrove's western exit; he uses the starter with a type advantage over yours. Report the theft at Elm's lab, then receive Poke Balls from Elm's aide on Route 29.

In Violet City, clear Sprout Tower and receive HM05 Flash before challenging Falkner. His team is Lv.7 Pidgey and Lv.9 Pidgeotto. Geodude from Dark Cave or Route 46 supplies Rock Throw; otherwise raw levels and neutral attacks are enough.
