Clair's Blackthorn Gym
Prepare for Dragonair and Kingdra
Ice Path requires Strength and contains HM07 Waterfall. Clair's three Lv.37 Dragonair use different elemental coverage, while Lv.40 Kingdra is weak only to Dragon in Generation II. After winning, enter Dragon's Den with Surf and Whirlpool; the selected edition below determines how Clair finally awards the Rising Badge.
Crystal: Dragon Shrine Test
Respect Pokemon to earn the Rising Badge and special Dratini
In Crystal, enter the Dragon Shrine and answer the elder's five questions with respect for Pokemon: choose Pal or Friend, Strategy or Raising, Anybody, Love or Knowledge, and Both. Clair is forced to award the Rising Badge; collect TM24 from her as you leave.
Return to the elder with an open party slot for a Lv.15 Dratini. If you answered every question without choosing a wrong response, it knows ExtremeSpeed; otherwise it knows Leer.
Rising Badge to Indigo Plateau
Victory Road, Elite Four, and Lance
Return to Elm for the Master Ball, then take Routes 27 and 26 to Victory Road. Your rival attacks near the exit. At Indigo Plateau, prepare for Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Champion Lance without a free heal between battles. Lance's team ranges from Lv.44 to Lv.50 and includes three Dragonite.
